Breakfast with the Lord Mayor

On Friday 9th November One Voice with Churches Together held a breakfast in the Spurriergate Centre with the Lord Mayor, her Consort, the Sherriff of York and his Lady.

This was the second in an ongoing series of breakfast meetings engaging the church with the civic authorities.

Spurriergate delayed opening to the public to provide us with a wonderful full English breakfast – they also offered us a terrific welcome!

It was a tremendous opportunity to hear from the Lord Mayor and the Sherriff how the church and council can work together.

Chris Cullwick chaired the event and interviewed the Lord Mayor, asking her what ways the church could pray for her and the council. Having over 700 engagements during the year, and 4 that very day, she asked for stamina!

The Lord Mayor started by expressing her thanks for the way the churches welcomed and prayed over her and the Civic Party at the Global Day of Prayer in York Minster. She did say that she loves visiting churches and would welcome invitations to regular Sunday worship all over the city.

The Lord Mayor talked about the great way our city has been enriched through inward settlement – particularly new citizens joining us from Eastern Europe. Although some people resist change she believes that in general the people of York are welcoming to others. The view was expressed that we must do our best to continue to welcome and integrate newcomers into the city

There was discussion about the church being the largest voluntary group in the city and the huge impact we can have in cooperative action.

Graham Hutchinson and David Casswell lead prayer for the Civic party and the City of York Council to close.
